I am a Singaporean but I live and work in Shanghai. This unique location gives me easy access to products in China. And over the many years I have been in this country, I have helped many of my friends (and also made a lot of friends on the internet) who asked me to help them source for products. To date, I have helped over 100 people. These people range from my friends, to procurement managers all over the world.
I have worked with big corporations, to mom&pops shop, to eBayers, from sourcing fish feeds to Christmas trees.
I guessed my biggest advantage is my command of both the English and Chinese language (and this I have my Singapore education to thank). My other advantage is price transparency. I give you the direct manufacturer’s price. This gives you the best competitive advantage.
Initially I thought most people familiar with international purchasing will also know the sourcing websites like Global Sources, Ali Baba, … plus many others. However, what many of people I source for tells me there’s a big difference in their prices and my prices. I found out later this has to do with doing your product searches on English and Chinese sites. Very often the prices quoted for non-Chinese speaking people (or company) are more expensive than those prices quoted for Chinese speaking people. Furthermore, over 80% of China’s businesses are not online. They take part in thousands or tradeshows held within the country each year, or depend on trading companies to launch their product.
With China becoming the No. 1 production house in the world, I believe every company can save money and increase profitability by sourcing here. - Great communication capabilities
- Good access to shipping and logistics ensures smooth and on time deliveries
- Special attention on shipment control. In a country like China, where often unexpected problems crop up, this becomes a very important subject. As part of this control, on the factory side, I try to select makers of good financial standing and good retail export business track record. Good back up sources wherever possible to be activated in the event of a supply crisis from the key source for all high volume items
- Ability to guide factories on packaging products in tune with international requirements
- Ability to develop non-traditional items/categories for export
